Andy Murray’s Skiing Disaster: From Grand Slams to Face Plants

Andy Murray is no stranger to competition. He’s got Wimbledon titles, Olympic gold medals, and a US Open championship under his belt. But when it comes to skiing? It's definitely a work in progress. The tennis legend recently embarked on a family ski trip to the Swiss Alps, where he quickly learned that slicing forehands and gliding down a mountain require very different skill sets. The experience, as he put it, was nothing short of humbling.
Murray shared his skiing struggles on the podcast Sporting Misadventures, admitting, “The first two days were shocking; I couldn’t get off the ski lifts, and my wife refused to go on the ski lift with me because it’s just embarrassing, isn’t it?” Not only was he getting humbled by the sport itself, but also by his own wife. That is what I like to call a double whammy..
His troubles didn’t stop at the lifts. Once he somehow made it up the mountain, the real challenge began: getting down. Instead of cruising down the mountain like a natural, Murray resorted to an elite-level technique known as… sliding down on his ass. Yes, the same man who defeated Federer and Djokovic had to be rescued by ski patrol like a lost child at a shopping mall. At this point, he might want to consider a name change—Andy Jerry has a nice ring to it.
It’s a tough pill to swallow for a guy so used to winning. But honestly? It’s refreshing. Seeing someone of Murray’s stature completely suck at something is a reminder that we’re all human. If a world-class athlete can struggle this hard, then maybe my own pathetic attempts at skiing aren’t so bad.
The good news? He’s not giving up. Despite the rough start, Murray said he actually enjoyed skiing (somehow) and plans to hit the slopes again. Let’s just hope that next time, he makes it down the mountain without ski patrol intervention—and without his wife roasting him.
